The Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto (PG), also called the Spoleto Festival or Spoleto Festival dei 2Mondi , is one of the oldest and most important festivals in Umbria, as well as an event of worldwide and for a while the only of its kind in Italy .
The Spoleto Festival was born in 1958 on the initiative of the master composer Gian Carlo Menotti and its vision: to unite two cultures and two worlds (hence the name) art very different, the European and the American, dedicated to art in all its form and expression. And set up an event that was as international as possible.
The “duality” was always present in the billboard. Beside shows pioneering exclusive, unusual and original works are staged and respectful work of the classical tradition.
In the 17 days of the festival, which begins usually in ‘ last Friday in June , alternate ballet, opera, painting, conferences, concerts , theater, conferences, church music, readings, puppet shows and contemporary art .
At the Festival of 2 Worlds, between the Teatro Nuovo, the Teatro Caio Melisso, the Roman Theatre, the Theatre of the six, the monumental complex of St. Nicholas, the Cortile della Rocca Albornoz, the Church of St. Euphemia, the auditorium of the Star and Piazza del Duomo (also home to the traditional Final concert), has featured some of the greatest artists of the ‘900 as Rudolf Nureyev, Carla Fracci, Luciano Pavarotti and Ken Russell . Or even the Teodelapio of Alexander Calder , the first monumental sculpture in the world that still is located in Spoleto, in the exact same spot where the artist left her as a gift in 1962 , opposite the railway station.
